Answer to our Provocations:Mari

1) Girls are much mature than boys

I disagree with this provocation because its not always girls that are matre but boys could also be mature if they are, or if they try to be matrue. I think any person in the world could be mature.

2) Boys only need to know ablut boy’s bodies adn girls only need to know about girl’s body

I disagree adn agree with this provocation. It is because maybe, some won’t need to or they might not want to learn and know about people’s body who is not he same gender as them selves. I don’t think it really matters.

3) Families are not important…who needs them?

I totally disagree with this provocation because I think families are the most important thing in your life. I think because many people learn from their family about ourside world and when you’re bullied by others, your family could be the one to help you. I think families are the most important because you could rely on them and you could learn from them.

Mari Exhibition Reflection

What did you feel went really well for you during your Exhibition?

What difficulties did you have and how did you deal with them?

What have you learned about yourself?

In Exhibition, I have learnt that I can speak loud and do well in my exhibition if I know alot. Also, I learned that I work best on my own except it takes some time and I cannot do alot and great big stuff.

What ‚Äėbig ideas did you take away from the Exhibition?

From the Exhibition, the Big Ideas that I took away from the Exhibition is that Poverty doesn’t just mean no money but alot of meanings like starvation or no roof or even just living with lots of fear and sadness and lonelyness.

How will you continue to move forward with your learning ‚Äď what will you do to live with the future in mind?

I will keep on learning more about Poverty from my mom and some day, I will go and work in organizations like United Nations where my mom works and help people live in Poverty and people who are uneducated.

If you worked on your own: What challenges did you face working as an individual and how did you overcome these?

I had faced challenges like not being able to do big performance like what I might have done with a group and that I had to make all the choices by my own thoughts without no discussion or any thing. But, I felt it was better that I was on my own because I did not need to argue of anything how it is going to be.

Today, I have finished my little video about what is happening because of Poverty. (The Facts I call it) And today, I also started my power point presentation with full page picture and some headings on. I did my power point presentation and finished it until the cause of Poverty part. I tried to keep it a minimum of words and only key points so like as Mr. Will said before, 80% of the presentation would be the presenter, and the 20% of the presentation would be the presentation its self.

Today, my mom came to visit and talk to us about the issue Poverty and Child Education. I learnt many things that my mom would not talk to me about, at home. But, I had some stuff that I knew because I talked with my mom a little at home.¬† I learnt from my mom that there are many faces of poverty. I learnt that there are Absolute Poverty¬†¬†which is when people have no food, no water, no shelter and clothes and live with less than a dollar a day, and some thing called Relative Poverty which they have a minimum amount of food, water, clothes, a small roof over their head and they can live if they try their best to live.¬† I learnt that Poverty doesn’t always mean¬†that¬†they have no¬†money but that it¬†means hunger, that they have no freedom, no job, no education, they cannot read, write or do simple calculation like 1 add 1 and 1 add 2.¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† I¬†had several¬† questions for my mom to think about and one of them was ”Why are women and girls in some country taken away the right to be educated?” My mom said that it was because many of their parents thought women and girls were just for giving birth, do the house work, and just make the generation go on forever. So, parents thought girls weren’t needed to be educated. But, today, I found out that it is not always girls that are taken away the rights to be educated. I found out that in some country like Mongolia, people there go around with camels and live all over place. But people there do not won’t some thing to happen to girls so they just send them to bording schools and boys, when they think their son is enough educated, they take them out of school and make them help the father take care of the horses and the camels and help the father to set up the tent. I was surprised by the information that in Thailand, many boys drop out of school when they are about in secondary level and most girls go up till university. But the one who gets richer and gets a good job is the men and boys. I thought that was quite unfair that boys say they don’t want to learn and drop out and the girls learn very hard but they cannot have good jobs in their future and boys do.

The things that I found that was difficult for me (Some difficulties I had) was finding good pictures that really really relates to the issue Poverty and Child Education. It was one kind of difficulty for me because flickr, flickr storm, photo bucket, they all have good quality pictures that would not be pixolated than google images, but in those three web sites flickr, flickr storm and photo bucket, they all had pictures that was not real life pictures (like the actors are doing it) and many pictures that weren’t relating at all to the issue poverty and Child Education.

I expect my job to be done like this:

  • April 23rd Friday- Finish up the power point presentation
  • April 26th Monday- Do some editing of presentation and Start thinking about what I am going to say
  • April 27th Tuesday- Start writing the Script, Q-Cards, notes on power point
  • April 28th Wednesday- Finish up and edit the script, q-cards, notes.
  • April 29th Thursday- Start practicing the presentation by my own and get it quite all of it in my head
  • April 30th Friday- Start practicing to other students who are also finish in my class and get some comments, improve it and still keep on practicing until the very end of the period
  • May 1st Saturday- Practice one last time of presentation and get perfectly ready for the presentation day May 3rd Monday in Student Led confrences

Today, the important thing I learnt today were:

a)70% of the Poor is Women

b)One way of ending poverty is to stop discriminating girls against boys and boys against girls

c)24,000 children die because of hunger and Poverty each day

d) At least 80% of the Humanity live with less than 10$ a day.

e)¬†75 million primary school aged kids around the world aren’t gettting education.

f)¬†More than 55% of the kids who doesn’t get education are girls.

g)  The places most found with people living in Poverty are Ethiopia, Burma, Vietnam, Dafu, Africa, North Korea, India, Laos, Bangladesh, Benjin, Faso, Ghana, Malawi, Mozamibique, Senegal, Uganda, Bolivia, Mexico and Peru.

(I made some more than five important things because today, I learned alot of important things.)
The most thing I want my visitors at exhibition is that ‘ If all of you change your mind and bring back the sharing empathy, Poverty might end.’ I want to tell this message the most because I think the issue Poverty started when human became so competitive about resources and become a little selfish and lost the sharing empathy.
For an example, first of all in a village called village A) long time ago, there were lots of natural resources and less people lived there. But when the people who lived in village B) heard that the village A) had lots of nice natural resources than them, they came to live in the village A). So even village A) had lots of resources and they could eat alot every day, when the village B) person came, they had to share so now people who lived in village A) from a long time ago cannot eat as much as they did before. So now, they want to eat alot and they became competitive about food. They did not share it to any one, when in the past with no village B) person, if they saw some one with only 3 apples and they had 20 apples, they would share.
My mind might change during this week, but right now, I am thinking that I might do a TED talk type of thing with a little powerpoint show with just the headings on and I will show 2 little clips.¬† I will show one video clip about the facts of what is happening around the world which is related to poverty.¬† And the other video clip which I would show last would be a video clip from¬†youtube called if the world was a village of 100 people. In the middle part, I would explain my audience about what is happening, why poverty is happening, ( The Cause of Poverty) How poverty is affecting on people, how I feel about it, and what I think we should do to help people living in poverty (How we as a community can help people living in poverty)¬† and how the goverments, organizations and some projects are doing to help people get out of the poverty cycle.¬† The look, even though it might not be a good idea, a little booth with only one desk and a computer on and some photos all around the table. I will atract people’s attention by showing the little video clip¬†with the facts of poverty that I will make.

My Plan¬†is that my mom did not come to talk to us and I haven’t got all the information, so I will start finding good pictures from series of Flickr and Photo Bucket and start making my little video clip with Photo Story.

Today, I achieved to talk with Mr. Chris about how I am going to Present my work. From the talk with Mr. Chris, I decided that I would do a TED talk type of thing with just talking of my own voice and some pictures on the table and a computer showing a little photo story which would have the pictures of poverty and the logo of organization and stuff. 
In World Language, We some times get a home work like we geta kid news paper with one topic on it and we research about it and finally write a commentary sort of thing with what is happening (From What we Researched) and what I think about that issue, then write what is the affects, why it is happening and then the last paragraph would be about the solution to that issue and the conclution from me, what I overall thought about it. I thought it might also be good if I made a little power point or a prezi with picture on it and I might talk about it in the form of the commentary we write in World Languages.

Today, I learned that 2.8 billion live with less than 2$ a day and 1.2 billion people live with less than 1$ a day which they are called absolute Poverty. I l earned that absolute Poverty is when you have very little money and you cannot buy enought food, water and when you cannot even buy or build shelter and no clothes to wear. I thought that was terrible. I also looked back on Mr. Steve’s website and I learned that 27 million people are slaves and atleast 5 million people has HIV AIDS.

Today, my group missed World Language and went to hear Prof. Francoise’s Presentation from Bridges. She talked about HIV/AIDS. I wanted to know alot about it since it affects on people and it traps them in the cycle of Poverty. But since this presentation was actually for much older kids¬† in secondary like Yr. 9, Yr. 11, Yr. 12 and 13, she used¬†alot of hard words and I could not understand and I also could not understand the word she said becase of her¬†accent.¬†I am not trying to be rude to Prof. Francoise, but it would have been much better for me if there was a translater who spoke with easy words that I can understand and in an english accent.

Today,¬†my group and I¬†watched the¬†World-Vision video that Mr. Warren gave us again because we had some things that we missed while we were writing down on the paper. When I watched the video again, I learnt more new things. I learnt that 8.3 million kids around the world dies before their 5th Birthday. I learnt that 25 pregnants die each hour. I learnt that 5 million out of 2 billion in poverty has HIV AIDS and I learnt that millions and millions of girls marry before they reach age 10. I was really surprised that girls marry before they are 10 years old because girls like me, same age¬†in some countries are already a wife of some one. I also feel very sad that 8.3 million kids die before their 5th Birthday. They are still so small and they haven’t had much expirience of the world, they only lived for a few years and they pass away, that is too too sad.

Some Questions I want to ask:

1. Why does Pregnants die when they have no problem with their body?

2. How come girls like me who is the same age is already some one’s wife when they are still supposed to be in school and learning?

3. How can we stop people from having HIV AIDS?

4. How could we cure the HIV AIDS?

Today in exhibition time, I did quite alot of noodle bib and researching on the computer. I found the search engine Think Quest quite good. I found this good website from Think Quest. I don’t remember the name of the website but it had informatin about the cause of Poverty and the cycle of Poverty.

I learnt that Lack of Education is one of the reason. This is because when the family is working and they need help because their money income is less. They want to send them to school, but they need some one to help them so they keep their children at home and let them work. The children who didn’t ¬†get education, they will have difficulty to find their job. So they are forced to get a job with less income of money.¬†I learnt that lack of education also includes the teachers. When there are no good teachers,¬†children won’t get educated properly.¬†I also learnt that the goverments are part of the cause of Poverty. (That when the goverment isn’t strong, there will be more people living in Poverty.) At the bottom of the page of the useful website I used, there was one solution for Poverty. It said that training teachers will be a solution to the education part of poverty and there will be more kids educated well.

Some Questions I have now are:

  1. I now know that people live in poverty because they don’t get education but why did they become poor when money was made?
  2. Is it that the parents want to send their kids to the school but they don’t have the money or is it that they need help so they don’t send their kids to school?
  3. It said that there is a cycle of poverty but what is a cycle of poverty?
  4. Why does the lack of goverment affect the people living in Poverty?
  5. Why is it always woman and girls that always work when they only can send a few kids to school or when they need help?

Today, my group and I went to 6AR’s presentation and heard Mr. Steve’s Presentation sort of like a TED talk. It was quite surprising¬†what I learnt today about slavery and child labor.¬†¬†One of the things that I was surprised was that out of nearly 7 billion people in the world, 1 billion live less than 30B a day and 2 billion people in the world live with 30B to 60B a day. When I heard that, it was quite shocking that nearly half of the population cannot have access to medical care, food, water, education and all the other Basic Needs. I also learnt that 27million people out of that 3 billion people are slaves.¬†

¬†From Mr. Steve I heard that he talked to this lady who had been working as a worker for an awful job. She had 11 other sisters and brothers and her family lived with less than 30B a day. She was looking for jobs and one day, some one came up to her and told her that she will be given a job to make clothes and she was asked to¬†work for 8 hours a day and she¬†was asked¬†to work 5 days a week. Mr. Steve told me that she was going to be payed 1 dollar per hour. To the lady, it sounded a good deal and when¬†I heard that from Mr. Steve, it sounded very good for her and her family. But then, when she was taken away and reached the place, the company¬†told her that the lady has to pay the transportation fees, which cost 2,500 dollars. Mr. Steve told me that since she was poor and had no money, she had to work for that money and pay back the money to the company. So the lady made only a little bit of profit working there for 6 years…

I felt very sorry for her, I was shocked and I felt really angry of the company that took the lady away for what it sounded like a good deal.  I think the lady was quite shocked too. I was very angry about slavery and I think there should be no slavery at all since were all same humans and I think that tricking people who really needs a job is not a good idea at all.

Now, I have some questions to ask Mr. Steve:

  1. What happened to the lady afterwards? Did she quit or did any one helped her?
  2. Why did slavery become a global issue again when it became illegal 200 years ago?
  3. Why did people even thought of slavery and use people as their slaves?

Today, my group and I achieved to sort out all the questions that we wrote yesterday into questions that are too hard to answer, questions that we can answer it right now, questions that we need to ask an expert for it and into questions that we can research a bit and answer it later. We also achieved to choose the best  questions. The questions we chose were:

  1. What is the cause of Poverty?
  2. How can we help the people living in Poverty?
  3. Why are woman and girls in some countries taken away the right to be educated at school?
  4. Does the goverment help the people in Poverty? If yes, how if no Why?

The questions I have now that just popped in my head is:

Why was money invented? If money wan’t invnented, was there still be an issue Poverty?

My plans for the few days is that I will keep on researching about this issue.

Today, my group and I achieved to think of two more inquiry lines for our topic. We got help from Mr. Chris. Our inquiry lines were:

1. An inquiry into the cause of Poverty

2. An inquiry into how we  as an community can help people living in Poverty.

My group and I also got to finish our mini Presentation about what other people think, feel, hope and fear about our topic. We found out that most of the people feel bad, sad, terrible about this issue ”Poverty, Education and acess to Basic Needs.” We all agreed with that but I want to know why they feel bad, sad and terrible about this issue. We also found out what people think we as a community could help people in Poverty. Most of the people talked about donating money, giving them a chance to have education/free education, help the adults get jobs even they didn’t get education, but with their abillities.¬†¬†

Today, I also learnt alot from the two guest speakers, Mr. Doug and Mr. Dorn. I learnt about Mr. Doug’s Culture and how his Maori people live together as a big community. I learnt from Mr.¬†Dorn about how the nature part of the compass is¬†very important. I really agreed with¬†him because if you¬†destroy nature, the whole food chain will collapse. First, the herbivores will be extinct. Next, the omnivore or the carnivore that eats those herbivores will be extinct. And then finally, us human will be extinct too because of no food and resources. I really agree that if we damage the nature then its like damaging our selves.

I have some questions from what I’ve learnt today. Firstly, I want to ask Mr. Dorn that how his life changed when he first came to live in the cities from where he used to run, hike, bike and go out doors so often. Secondly, I want to ask Mr. Doug that is the Maori people sharing and caring who isn’t competitive about their resources. Finally, I want to ask all the people who answered my survey, WHY they think, fell, hope, wish about it. WHY they think they should do this this and that to help the people in Poverty.
